A question that executives ask of Mally Roncal, celebrity makeup artist and and creator of Mally Beauty makeup, and probably other artists also.
My question is, how do I soften my ethnicity? If you have an answer for that, what are you asking me to do to myself?
All naivete aside, I know what they mean. Straighten the hair, powder the face, maybe even some light colored highlights, and light brown contacts. After the pictures are taken, more attempts to "soften ethnicity" are made. Slimming the thighs, hips, behind, thin the nose and lips. Do you recognize the person you are?
This is in response to the article in Glamour magazine: "Your race, your looks" In response to the criticism of the magazine after a Glamour magazine staffer struck a sensitive nerve among Black women with her comments.
Black women have to love each other first. That is our biggest obstacle. We don't appreciate the beauty in other women who deal with the same things. Black women deal with the same dumb questions, "How do you wash your hair," "Why does your hair shrink when it gets wet?" And we deal with the same phobias. We have to be proud of ourselves as women and proud of who we are. It's depressing. I can't save the world, if I can lead a few people to an educational website, book, anything about the beauty, pride, and strength of Black women, all while uplifting and not criticizing my fellow Black women, well that's half the battle.
I refuse to soften my ethnicity. I love the way I look, the bounce in my hair, whether pressed out or natural kink, and the creamy color of my skin.

Parenting Magazine with her Twin (Frats) Daugthers born Dec 12th 2006 after 45 days of bed-rest w/her white Husband Phil Beckett (seems cool) about 10-15 yrs Older and HOW CAN YOU EXPECT-A-FOAL if You're TOO OLD TO FOAL..? this particular (the second Google hit-link-site is describing how Hair & Make-Up artists and Corporate mainstream America are Very Uncomfortable with Afro-Ethnic Hairstyles in women as a Glamour Magazine editor "resigned" stating this OUTLOUD and many angry readers wrote letters about her remarks and this was around the time of the NAPPY HEADED-HO'S remark by IMUS whom was forced to resin with Al Sharpton stating if you had called my daughter a Nappy -Headed Ho you Know what time it is on his radio show ..(The Tyler PD White Announcers had the NERVE to State IT'S WATER UNDER THE BRIDGE and I HATE NIGS GOOKS AND WETBACKS IN THE SAME BREATH with NO Insight !! ) I even had the NBC executive on a Live-Feed at MSNBC and Today show and looked up his Bio he was a meteor and still not yet 50 yrs old when he made it to the top.. Mally Roncal is being interviewed in this article along with many other African American Beauty or Women magazine editors Fashion Magazines Blog Owners and Academic A-A Femme Professors two from Texas (UT-Dallas) in a Panel Convened by Glamour Magazine to which the above persons were invited and the Readers whom sent angry letters but not otherwise open to the Public.
