I have learned that if a man has it together before he meets you, he didn't need you to get to where he's at and odds are...he's not going to need you later. When you find a man that has 80% of what you're looking for, build him up that last 20% (Make sure you have your own stuff going on too) The good ones will appreciate you for it and remember that this woman loved me when I didn't have nothing. it has taken me a little time to come up with something to say about Disney's FIRST AFRICAN-AMERICAN PRINCESS!

I'm so excited to see a princess who looks like me, I grew up with Belle, Jasmine and Ariel, I'm so happy to see that Princess Tiana is brown-skinned. From what the trailer shows, it seems like it's going to be a cute movie, omitting the firefly at the end. I'm not going to criticize a movie I haven't seen yet. Scratch that...why isn't her Prince African-American?Why can't she find a nice Black man...that's my only criticism until I see the movie. I just hope Disney is smart about this.

I wish I had a daughter by 2009 so that I could take her to see this for Christmas...it will definitely be bought on dvd for her to enjoy when she comes.

I'm praying...

True Life...I'm Graduating College

I should contact MTV so they can put me on True Life...I'm Graduating College.

My show would go like this...

I am a senior at Buffalo State College majoring in journalism. I guess writing isn't about clever headlines, although some of my journalism classes beg to differ.

Anyway, there are a few things on my mind:
1) Should you ultimately stay in a relationship if everyone is against it?
2) Family really sucks sometimes. I just do not care for them right now.
3) My impending graduation
4) Finding a career!!!
5) Jealousy and envy go hand in hand and they both are not a good look.

So, regaining confidence in myself and realizing that God has my back if no one else does seems easy but in fact it's very hard. Those are just five of the thoughts running through my mind. I know that if I prepare myself enough, I will have a lucrative career, graduation is a good thing, family will never change and my relationship is my relationship.

Scared of Graduation

I am approaching my last semester of college. This seems like it will be a good, however, I came across an article from The Wall Street Journal titled: The Declining Value of Your College Degree

I am very upset about this. I can't believe that I have spent 4+ years in college and when I graduate, there will barely be any jobs available. Bonus: If I ever get laid off, it will be extremely hard for me to find another job.

This is my plan:

I don't want to be a struggling journalist, I want to have health insurance, be able to pay my rent and afford food, be respected and afford to live. I don't want to live off my passion for writing, I want to make money doing something that I enjoy doing. Writing as a career is not stable and in the age of blogs, anyone can write. I want to be pursued for my talent I don't want to experience so much rejection that I just have to give up.

That's why I have decided to pursue public relations. It still has the elements of journalism with stability. With the state of newspapers and magazines, I don't want to go into a field that could be dead before I'm 30.

So I am going to be a public relations, whatever, and freelance wherever I can. I'm sure diehard journalists are going to be up in arms about my decision, but hey, I gotta eat and I want to have a family someday.

Journalism and public relations aren't entirely different but until journalism can make a comeback, I'm jumping on the public relations bandwagon.

Juicy Campus

Gossip, rumors, buzz and my personal favorite, back-fence talk. Our society glorifies gossip when it comes to celebrities. Entertainment it's called. Perez Hilton has made a career out of gossip about celebrities on his website and we may not think twice about it. What about would you do if you see gossip about posted by your own peers on a site developed just for that?

Juicycampus.com was developed August 1, 2007 by Matt Ivestor, a Duke University graduate, "with the simple mission of enabling online anonymous free speech."

Juicycampus.com boasts anonymity, its slogan being: "Always Anonymous...Always Juicy." The Privacy and Tracking Policy reads: "It is not possible for anyone to use this website to find out who you are or where you are located, we do not collect any information directly from you. We do not track any information that can be used by us to identify you." There are 61 supported schools including the Navy and the Air Force, and an opportunity to suggest a school, anonymously, of course.

Buffalo State College has no listing but UB does. The website says it is in beta, which means they are trying the site out so various campuses are not supported. The students enrolled at supported campuses have no protection from the potential posts. There is no need to register and anyone from anywhere can post anything about anyone. Under Juicy Campus's terms and conditions, users agree not to post anything "unlawful, threatening, abusive, tortious, defamatory, obscene, libelous, or invasive of another's privacy." There are posts that name individuals and claim they are sluts, pedophiles, drug dealers, and revealing personal identifying information so readers will not be mistaken as to who they are. Once something is posted, it cannot be edited or removed unless it is false. However in the site's FAQ section, they are exceptions to that rule. The site says that a person's opinion can be "stupid, ignorant, or mean-spirited, but they can't be untrue." They claim that the First Amendment protects jokes and parodies and if something ridiculous is posted as fact, it is obviously meant as a joke.

The site has seen a lot of publicity lately from CNN to college newspapers. Especially on campuses that have listings on the site. Students at Pepperdine, Columbia, and Yale, among others, are trying to ban the site from their campus.

As college students in the age of technology, we have to be aware that we have online reputations when we sign up and participate on site's such as facebook, MySpace, YouTube, and Juicy Campus. These reputations can come back to haunt us when we are adults. A simple Google search can give information from any one of these sites that you may have forgotten to a potential employer. With the occurrence of school shootings, we need to think about the consequences of our behavior and our behavior toward others now, before it is too late.

All I know is...I better not catch my name up there!

Toxic Parent

"You get over it!" Thank you Mary J. Blige

Dr. Susan Forward Toxic Parents: Overcoming their hurtful legacy and reclaiming your life. The book which serves my inspiration.

I had a toxic parent. Someone who was supposed to be a role model, a substitute for a mother because my biological mother was not there. A loving, encouraging, supportive, guiding, nurturing, mother-figure. Instead, I received a toxic parent. I refuse to call her names anymore, before it used to be just evil bitch, among others, now, she is and will always be to me, a toxic parent.

The beginning of this post is for those who don't understand how it's hard to just get over having a toxic parent. No, I am not upset at you for having parents who were good to you. I love them for that and I strive to be a parent who will be good to their children. It is not easy to just get over it. It is not easy to just figure it out. When you hear the same thing about yourself for a long time, you start to believe it. When you finally come up from out of that, you think it is over but you are sadly mistaken. Those feelings will creep right back up on you and ruin things for you. I finally came to terms with that.

In black and white. No, I am not under her control anymore, so if my life isn't going the way I want it to go, I should change it because I am in control now. However, those feelings that have been inbred in you still arise and hold you back. When you don't deal with something, it can come back in evil ways. You don't want to have so much bitterness for someone who doesn't think twice about you. Give that back. Tell that person how they made you feel and how it has affected you. After that, walk away. Don't carry that around with you anymore. I am taking some time to think about what I'm going to say before I fly to where she is and walk right into that house and tell them. I am doing it in person so they know, this isn't a joke. You can't just not think about something and hope that it goes away. I can testify that it won't. It will only get worse.

I realize that I will probably never be able to get my father to divorce his wife but I can let both of them know that she will never be a mother to me anymore, she will only be your wife. I will no longer address her as mother, I will call her by her name. This may seem harsh, but you didn't grow up with this toxic parent.

Can We Just Soften The Ethnicity A Little Bit?

A question that executives ask of Mally Roncal, celebrity makeup artist and and creator of Mally Beauty makeup, and probably other artists also.

My question is, how do I soften my ethnicity? If you have an answer for that, what are you asking me to do to myself?

All naivete aside, I know what they mean. After the pictures are taken, more attempts to "soften ethnicity" are made. Slimming the thighs, hips, behind, thin the nose and lips. Do you recognize the person you are?

This is in response to the article in Glamour magazine: "Your race, your looks" In response to the criticism of the magazine after a Glamour magazine staffer struck a sensitive nerve among Black women with her comments.

Black women have to love each other first. That is our biggest obstacle. We don't appreciate the beauty in other women who deal with the same things. Black women deal with the same dumb questions, "How do you wash your hair," "Why does your hair shrink when it gets wet?" And we deal with the same phobias. We have to be proud of ourselves as women and proud of who we are. It's depressing. I can't save the world, if I can lead a few people to an educational website, book, anything about the beauty, pride, and strength of Black women, all while uplifting and not criticizing my fellow Black women, well that's half the battle.

I refuse to soften my ethnicity. I love the way I look, the bounce in my hair, whether pressed out or natural kink, and the creamy color of my skin.

My very first clip

This article was written with Jennifer Sikora, Associate News Editor for the Buffalo State College Newspaper, The Record. "It basically throws us into a whole new category of recognized prestige that goes with being here and being a graduate of our program."

Buffalo State will join the rankings of only 111 other colleges within the country, alongside intitutions like Columbia University.

The accrediting organization selects a combination of four professionals and academics from throughout the country to review the program, but because Buffalo State offers a public relations program, the accrediting body will also have someone from the field of public relations.

The accreditation body was here two years ago for a pre-accreditation visit; it was part of the regular SUNY review, which occurs every five years. At that time, the department fell short in a few areas, but has made the necessary improvements and is now ready.

One of the changes included building stronger relationships with alumni by reinstating newsletters and developing meetings in which the alumni could be involved.

Also, until last year there were no scholarships offered exclusively to communication students. Now $5,000 scholarship for a junior, $500 for a graduating senior and two $1,000 scholarships for freshman, awarded by the communication department, which was money raised by the department.

The ACEJMC will be returning here for one day between Oct. 21 and Oct. 24. At this point the department will know whether they have gained accreditation. Every six years the department will have to be reviewed to maintain this status.

The academic standards will not change; students will still be required to maintain a 2.6 grade point average and a letter grade above a "C."

"Current students will see some benefits when looking for a job because they can say they went to an accredited school. Students have met high standards going through a strong program," said Smith.

However, some students have different opinions on whether accreditation will positively affect their chances of employment. A broadcasting student, Alexandra Alston, preparing for graduation in May said, "I know it'll be hard to get a job whether the department is accredited or not."

On the other hand, according to senior Jen Radomski, a journalism student said, "I think of course it looks better to have come from an accredited school. I think they take it more into consideration, even if they don't say so."

Description 1

This is from one of my journalism texts. I tried to describe something using all five senses. Tell me if I did a good job and it will be improved later.

Fisherman pull in their catch for the day. The fish scales sparkle green and gold against the setting sun. The smell of the catch lingers in the air mixing with the crisp smell of the ocean and aromas from nearby hamburger and french fry food stands. Children run and play on the docks, the thump of their feet on the wooden planks provide a rhythm for the moment. The air gets cooler and goosebumps bubble up on bare arms and legs. The sky turns colors of dark orange an red like a ripe mango.

After that exercise there were two questions:

Why do I Want to Write?

I want to write because I have always liked to write. I can remember keeping diaries and journals, writing stories and poems, and anything else when I was younger. In high school I loved english and in college I never found a major I liked until journalism. At first it was a struggle but now it is a challenge that I love! I love learning about journalism. I want to change the lives of Black America and I believe that I can do that through writing. My ultimate dream and goal in life is to be a mother I want to write children's and parenting books and write for a parenting magazine. I want to inspire and motivate people with my writing. I love what motivational quotes and passages do for me and I hope to do that for others.

Looking critically at my personality and the traits that I have that will help and hinder me, I love to research and find out about things. I think that is the key trait for journalists. I don't want to go to the extremes that Veronica Guerrin did and get killed, but I would like to do all that I can to inform my audience. I am getting better at talking to people and asking for help. My only setback is that I get distracted very easily. I am somewhat naive and if I have to move to NYC or another cutthroat town I have to get a thick skin and stop looking for the best in people.

I am going to make it happen...just wait.

My Black Is Beautiful

Here's a little background information before my post. In the beginning of the semester for my com 319 class, the teacher asked what journalism field we wanted to work in and what kind of publications we wanted to write for. Since January 2005, I have wanted to write for Essence magazine and when I said that, one of my class mates said: "Every black girl I know wants to write for Essence magazine." He was black by the way. I was kind of offended at first but after reading the advertisement, which was seven pages long, I am no longer offended but proud and excited about wanting to work for a magazine or a publication that wants to uplift black women which is what I want to do with my writing.

In Essence magazine's December issue, there is a special advertising section for a website called http://www.myblackisbeautiful.com/. The advertisement included a personal journal and discussion guide. The first page held the actual poem, My Black is Beautiful, then an introduction by Najoh Tita-Reid, the Associate Director of Multicultural Marketing at Protor and Gamble. Instructions are to start a conversation group by discussing the topics mentioned in the Personal Journal and Discussion Guide, it tells what the goals of the discussion should be and how to go about starting one.

The next page asks a series of questions titled: My Beauty Journey. Some of the questions are; When do you feel most beautiful? Who did you think was the most beautiful girl in school when you were growing up? Describe her appearance. In what ways is being a Black girl different from just being a girl? Then it gives action activities. This one was to intentionally affirm Black women and girls by reminding them how beautiful they are. Be specific.

This is something that black women of all ages need today. I am a black woman and I feel that our image is not affirmed and continues to be the slowest image to change into a positive over the years. This is so important to for us black women and I am going to spread this around.

I don't have any new years resolutions. I just have things that I want to do. I want to get closer to GOD, get out of debt, get better with my writing, and try to do this campaign. I think that this is something that I want to be a part of. Go to the site and enlighten yourself!

This aspiring journalist

Although I suffer from c.o.c, comparison outta control, I know what I want. I know that I want to be a writer. Writing is my only passion. I love writing and I love to research. I am a self proclaimed research junky. Yes, what other people think is the worse part of an assignment, I find that it is the second best thing to do (the writing being the first of course) I love being in the know!

This aspiring journalist asks...what is the 'it' topic of interest for me, besides giving into America's guilty pleasure of celebreality. I will only write for entertainment as long as it isn't: 25 Most Shocking Britney moments or anything along those lines. I love music, movies, and television but I am not glued to the set during entertainment tonight or vh1's many specials on various celebrities. Don't get it twisted, I am not holier than thou, I love Best Week Ever and would love the opportunity to be a panelist, however, chasing celebrities and blogging about them is not a passion of mine. So what are my interests? My interest right now is my next article.

Natural hair. My hair is in it's natural state. I love my natural hair, the health, the texture, and the versatility. I don't love how some people are not embracing another unique and beautiful aspect of African American culture. My article will be about natural hair and the controversy that surrounds it. I am still in the research phase. Don't worry...it will be posted soon.

Recent news...Oprah and Will Smith stand behind Obama. I'm not up on the campaign trail so far...I know that when my fall semester starts in 2008 I will be all caught up. That's no excuse though. I should be up on it now. It's a toss up...I am an African American woman and Obama is black and Hilary is a woman. I like how my teacher described it, male, pale, and stale. I wonder if America is ready to let that go yet. We shall see.

Follow up to article

My iPod vs. Zune article was the first article that I wrote myself, outside of my assignments. I am proud of it but I am also nervous. I hope that people read it and notice it but I am so afraid of the criticism. I want to write about Black America, entertainment, fashion and technology and I wanted to show my potential.

I tried not to make the article biased. I wanted to give equal information on how both of the devices worked. I wanted to make sure that people were informed. Initially I started out doing one article and as I was writing the one that I posted I thought that it was more for older adults who weren't as familiar with mp3 players as younger people would be. I was going to write a second article that would appeal more to younger people. I decided against that because I might have made it biased.

I have had 4 iPods. My first one was a shuffle, then a nano, then the ones that played video, and most recently a touch. I have never had a Zune but my sister bought one for our younger sister and that was what gave me the idea to write the article. I have to overcome my fear of criticism. When I do ge a career I will have an editor that's going to criticize me so I should get used to it. Eventally I will be an editor and I will have to give my writers criticism.

I don't know what my next article will be about so stay tuned!

Ipod vs. Zune

This is a technology article.

Christmas shopping is underway and one thing that may be returning to your lists is an mp3 player, however, an iPod may or may not be the go-to product for some this year
With the introduction of the iPod touch and redesigned iPod models, Apple wants to guarantee its staying power. Other mp3 players haven't come close to matching the desire for an iPod, but Apple's longtime competitor, Microsoft, has redesigned the version of their mp3 player, Zune, to better compete with the iPod.
Key technical features when choosing an mp3 player are: price, capacity for memory (GB), compatible audio formats (iPod won't play WMA files) and battery life. Looking at capacity for memory determines how many songs the mp3 player will hold. Zune and iPod are almost neck and neck with memory.
Microsoft's Zune has one design that comes in 4, 8, 30, and 80GB capacity. All have a built in FM radio, wireless sync capabilities, plays video and shows pictures. The new designs are smaller in size, have glass screens instead of plastic, better video resolution and the squircle or navigation pad is touch sensitive. The 4 and 8 GB Zune come in black, green, pink and red. The 30 GB comes in black, pink, brown, white and red. The 80GB comes in black.
Apple's iPods have four different designs, shuffle, nano, classic and touch. All newly designed, the shuffle is 1GB, the nano holds 4 and 8GB, the classic holds 80 and 160GB and the touch holds 8 and 16GB. All except the shuffle now play video. With the iPhone being introduced this summer, the iPod touch was designed resembling the iPhone. The most recent addition to the iPod family has a 3.5 inch multi-touch screen and is wireless capable. With all these new features memory is sacrificed, as the iPod touch only comes in 8 and 16GB. The shuffle comes in white, blue, green, purple, and Product Red color. The nano comes in the same colors with black added. The classic comes in black and white, and the touch comes only in black.
Microsoft Zune uses the Zune Marketplace to download, store and play music, videos and podcasts. The marketplace gives the option to use an "all-you-can-eat" $14.99 per month subscription pass or download songs using refillable Microsoft Points. The subscription pass allows you to download as many songs as you want per month. When you stop paying for the subscription, you lose the songs. The Microsoft Points options are 400 points for $5, 1,200 points for $15, 2,000 points for $25, and 4,000 for $50. Songs go for 79 points each. Microsoft points are can be used to buy music, videos, or, if you own an XBOX 360, games for XBOX Live, and windows games. The Zune Marketplace shows recent releases, what's hot, artist pages and your own customized page
Apple's iTunes music store allows you to download music, videos, podcasts, audio books, TV shows, movies and games. Songs are $0.99, videos and TV shows are $1.99, and podcasts are free. Audio books and movies range in price as books and DVD's do in retail stores. They can go on sale or clearance. Full seasons of televisions shows are also available. Games are available for iPod nano and classic iPod only for $4.99. Pages are tailored for artist, author, TV show, etc; iTunes also makes a playlist with recommendations for you based on what you have purchased. To make a purchase a registration is needed and billing information is asked for once. After that you are free to make purchases. If you are not connected to the internet you cannot access the iTunes music store but you can access your music library.
What Apple and Microsoft may not take into account is: not everyone buys music from iTunes or Zune Marketplace. Services such as Bearshare, limewire, rhapsody, etc, allows users to download and share music for free.
Wireless is a relatively new feature for mp3 players. Microsoft Zune allows wireless syncing, meaning you don't have to connect the Zune to the computer to upload songs. Zune allows wireless sharing songs, pictures and video with other Zune owners with the touch of a button. You are also able to stream music to your Xbox 360 from the Zune.
IPod touch comes with safari and YouTube buttons installed automatically. Through safari, you can browse full web pages and zoom in or out on the page using the touch interface. Touching the YouTube button sends you to the page where you can search and view videos. The iTunes music store is available on the iPod. You can search, preview and buy music. The benefit here is that you don't have to wait to sync the music on the iPod. As long as you have wireless access you can buy music right off the iPod.
The prices of the iPod and Zune are close on the websites. The 4GB Zune is $149.99, 8 and 30GB are $199.99, and the 80 GB is $249.99. The iPod shuffle sells for $79, 4GB nano's are $149 and 8GB is $199. The classic 80 GB is $249 and 160GB is $349. The 8GB touch is $299 and 16GB is $399. If you want to compare the iPod and Zune, I would suggest comparing the 4 and 8GB Zune with the nano, and the 30 and 80GB with the classic.
When deciding which mp3 player to buy this Christmas, keep in mind the commitment that it takes for upkeep. Consider buying a protection plan to cover any mishaps that may occur. Good luck shopping!

It's been a year

I can't believe that I started this blog a year and one day ago and I have only posted one thing! Last year I was so excited about this and it just died off. Well...now that I've found it again here's an update!

I am 22 and still in college working on my bachelor's in journalism. I really want to finish. I actually took the rest of the semester off and I will be returning in January. I always do so good in the Spring. I don't know what that is about. Maybe I should write about that. I learned a lot about myself and I realized that I should not compare my life to others. As hard as it is...I have to stop because it is really depressing. I have a myspace. It's myspace.com/Misssharese. I have some blogs there also.

Well to the present. I don't know what to put in blogs. After reading some of Miss Info's blog it just seems like you write about what you hear about. I hear about a lot of things. I just don't know if other people are interested in hearing about them. In my Writing For Magazines book, it says I can get ideas for stories from things that I read. I HATE TO READ. Maybe I should rephrase that. I hate reading what's not important. Maybe press releases should come to my desk because if I get bored reading your press release it probably isn't exciting enough to be put in my publication. I don't know if I could read my own post because it is so long and unimportant. Let me cut to the chase.

I am reintroducing myself to my blog after a year and a day. I promise to update more often.

It Starts

I will be using this blog for my writing career. I am a junior in college and I want to be a writer. I'm supposed to be writing everyday with this day as an exception.

I have to write out things to remember them. So if you're reading this and you're thinking; "Why is she writing this when it's common sense?" I know this but I need to have it somewhere to remember.

Someone told me that I should write everyday and that I should love to see my name in print. I will write whatever I need to. Next semester is going to be better for me. I am going to join some clubs and/or organizations, I'm going to be more outgoing, and I'm going to be really into my journalistic journey. I like that...journalistic journey. I guess that I had to get adjusted to living on campus and a new school this semester. Next semester will be so much better.

I'm not completely sure how or what I want to write when I graduate, I just know that I want to write something for someone. I do want to start a magazine or a website because I believe there's a void that needs to be filled and if it's filled a group of people will be so much better.

Stay tuned for tomorrow's post. It should be interesting.
